Lecture Series "Alternative Spaces: The Ancient Sanctuary Beyond Ritualized Cult Practices"

12 Feb 2026 , 18:30 - 20:00
CAP 3, Christian-Albrechts Platz 3 , 24103 Kiel
The lecture series focuses on ancient Greek and Roman sanctuaries. It examines how space is not simply given, but is created through the interplay of landscape, built structures and human actions. Instead of looking at buildings, people and rituals separately, she focuses on the interaction between architecture and social life. In doing so, she looks beyond the temples themselves and the sacrificial rites that are usually the focus of scholarly interest. Instead, it deliberately emphasizes lesser-known structures, the living and working areas of cult personnel and the role of everyday life and economic activities. Scholars from the fields of archaeology, Egyptology, history and philology thus reveal alternative spaces within the respective sanctuaries.
The event is a partner of Science Comes to Town.
