Lecture : The lugworm, a small worm but a great architect

24 Mar 2026 , 18:00 - 20:00
ORGANISÉ PAR : Ifremer and ENIB
Ifremer – amphithéâtre Laubier, 1625 route de Ste Anne 29280 Plouzané

What if, for years, you had unknowingly overlooked one of the greatest architects of the coastline? Hermit crabs, small marine worms commonly found on our shores, will be honoured in an entertaining and demonstrative presentation on the virtual reality platform dedicated to them. ENIB and Ifremer are joining forces to introduce you to a little-known subject and perhaps inspire some future careers. The conference will be hosted by Sébastien Chambres, director of ENIB, and Romain Abasq, actor at Impro Infini. There will be an opportunity to continue the discussion with the speakers in a relaxed setting.

This interactive session will focus mainly on the presentation of the virtual reality platform that recreates hermit crab reefs. Through various short videos, you can already discover these marine worms with their amazing abilities. This will allow you to discover their importance, their habits and, above all, their role on the coastline. You can manipulate the ragworms and reefs with 3D visualisation, discover unpublished archives, and travel to different foreshores, including the largest in Europe, in the bay of Mont-Saint-Michel. This platform was designed by researcher Stanislas Dubois, in collaboration with ENIB and the company Virtualys, which made the implementation of this project possible.
