Tomislav Primorac, a former physicist and stand-up comedian, will humorously tell the story of his journey from science to comedy through this “stand-up lecture.” He will share how he tried to pursue two careers simultaneously, only to end up with two burnouts instead of one, how a brief career in data science emerged as a temporary side effect of the pandemic, and how he eventually ended up working full-time in the world of comedy, show business, and clickbait headlines. Although he left the world of science long ago, his analytical approach has followed him into comedy and continues to shape his sense of humor. He will show us how natural scientists look at everyday life, take a critical look at the things people believe in today’s age of misinformation, offer some practical guidelines for distinguishing pseudoscience from science, and demonstrate how critical thinking is something that science and comedy have in common. The scientific approach helps us find the truth amid the whirlpool of misinformation, while comedy helps us, for our own well-being, not to take the world too seriously. At the same time, humor and caricature can sometimes be the best way to portray the absurdity and illogical nature of human patterns of behavior.
