By Patrick Fricot, Director of the Brittany Main Munitions Establishment (EPMu BRE); Jean-Luc Quentel, Head of the Munitions Group at EPMu BRE from 2014 to 2025; and Jean-Pierre Guedes, former Quality Manager at EPMu BRE and painter. The Saint-Nicolas Pyrotechnics Depot, located at the head of Brest harbour in the municipality of Guipavas, has been providing ammunition support to Navy units along the Atlantic coast for a century and a half. This support primarily involves logistical functions: procurement, receipt, storage, handling, inbound and outbound flows, and ammunition disposal. It also encompasses, in the background, production functions that have evolved over the decades (manufacturing, maintenance, and keeping equipment in operational condition). These historical and artistic spotlights, whilst respecting the discretion required on such a sensitive subject, shed light on a little-known yet essential profession in supporting the armed forces.
