The Science Comes to Town (SCTT) opening conference in Split highlighted how science, community engagement, business involvement and informed policymaking can preserve heritage and shape a sustainable future. Above all, it conveyed a clear message: science belongs to everyone.
Key points and recommendations emerged. SCTT should be a continuous initiative, linking scientists with society to boost awareness and trust needed to tackle major challenges such as climate change while strengthening competitiveness and innovation. Young people of all ages and genders must be encouraged to engage in science, while stronger efforts are required to bridge persistent gender gaps. EU research and innovation funding should focus more on solutions and practical applications that connect research with communities. Cultural heritage connects many scientific fields and informs inclusive policymaking.
This report summarises the key discussions, conclusions and recommendations from the SCTT launch event, which took place on 20 January in Split. The discussions centred on how communities drive scientific progress, how science can support cultural heritage and the importance of diversity in science education.
